Buffer zones pose a variety of benefits when trying to control shoreline erosion. Lake shorelines are always in potential danger of erosion, and with the implementation of buffer zones, this can slow down or eliminate this process from occurring altogether. Florida shorelines could truly reap the benefits of a buffer zone as this could assist with preserving natural habitats and our overall ecosystem. In doing so, we will be contributing to the cause of preserving our water and soil from any and all toxic environmental contributors. This is a long term investment, and steps need to be taken as early as possible to ensure that we don’t suffer from these hardships later on down the line.

Buffer zones slow down the movement of particles before they have a chance of reaching the lake shorelines. The more vegetation that exists, erosion is less likely to permeate and cause significant damage. The blockage of harmful chemicals and pesticides entering the soil and water is without a doubt an added bonus. It’s another way of protecting the biodiversity that’s present within our environment. It’s safe to say that these zones are more than equipped to handle any and all pathogens that come it’s way, given that they were constructed and set up in the correct way.

Solid buffer zones also do an exceptional job of keeping all kinds of animals away. Certain creatures are more than capable of destroying the foundations of a Florida shoreline. This allows for a buffer zone that has an abundant amount of plants and vegetation, to attract healthy and less harmful consumers such as butterflies and bees to carry out natural processes like pollination. Buffer zones are also a great way of counteracting pollution, which is imperative as polluted waters always face the possibility for any living being that has direct exposure to it. The zones also provide an aesthetic appeal, making the lake or pond come off as more visually pleasing. Buffers are more vital than we realize. Water quality is obviously extremely important, and buffers do a superb job in ensuring that the water isn’t contaminated. Water is something that we consistently need access to, and if this is tampered with in any way, it could spell doom for those of us who consume it.

Habitats are crucial for the sake of our natural ecosystems. Buffer zones help in protecting the habitats of all kinds of species, while simultaneously keeping out the ones that are harmful to them. One could argue that the well being of animals is of equal importance compared to humans. If we don’t take the correct measures to ensure that animals like birds and frogs are protected, we lose a plethora of diversity in our ecosystem. If the buffers are installed correctly, they can do an adequate job of protecting all of the wildlife that inhabits these areas. Wildlife preservation is extremely important because we don’t want to run the risk of species becoming endangered or extinct. Once this happens, despite our best efforts, working to protect what’s left of the population becomes that much more daunting. Then more fears will continue to manifest, and conservationists will have to step in and regulate the number of the species that are running rampant in the wild. At this point, they would stand a better chance of staying together in captivity at locations like zoos or wildlife sanctuaries. Any disruption to the flow of the food chain could spell doom for many other species that are dependent on consumption for their own survival. The food chain is already as tight enough as it is, and minute disruptions like this can have a lasting impact.

Human safety is also crucial, as the buffers make it so that it’s harder to get access to the water. This can give parents with small children peace of mind, especially for the kids who are weak swimmers or if they can’t swim at all, the last thing parents want to have to worry about is the possibility of their child drowning due to an exposed body of water that wasn’t properly structured with a solid buffer zone that’s meant to keep certain people as far away as possible. Buffers are also capable of catching debris and trash. For those that work as clean up crews by the Florida shoreline, the cleanup process becomes a lot easier if a lot of trash has not entered the water.

Aesthetics are important, and buffers do provide a visual appeal. But it’s important to note that the impacts go far beyond the visuals. When we think of longevity and prosperity for our lakes, ponds, and canals, these systems will get the job done in more ways than one. This same concept can be applied to most visual alterations of other products or places that we inhabit or associate with. If you change the roof on your house, for instance, this will look more visually pleasing, but it also aids in protection from the rain, insects, debris, contaminants, and much more. At times we are forced to implement or build upon these foundations, failure to do so will open the possibility of long term ramifications.
